Synthetic Rubbers

HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber)

Application
ICE / Motor
Solution
Sustainability

HNBR (Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber) is produced by hydrogenating the double bonds in the main chain of nitrile rubber (NBR), the most widely used oil-resistant rubber. While HNBR retains the superior oil resistance and easy processing properties of NBR, it benefits from significant improvements over NBR in resistance to heat, ozone, and chemicals.
Zeon can supply an ISCC PLUS-certified HNBR through the mass balance approach, as a sustainable product.

Characteristics

Balanced Resistance to Oil, Cold, and Heat
HNBR can be used across a wide temperature range, from −40°C to 150°C, while retaining the superior oil resistance properties of NBR.
Exceptional Mechanical Strength
HNBR exhibits exceptional mechanical strength. In particular, Zeoforte®, a polymer alloy that combines the zinc salts of methacrylic acid with HNBR, demonstrates especially high mechanical strength.
Chemical Resistance
HNBR exhibits superior chemical resistance compared to NBR due to the hydrogenation of double bonds, which increases the number of thermally and chemically stable carbon-carbon saturated bonds.
Sustainable Product (ISCC PLUS-Certified)
Zeon can supply an ISCC PLUS-certified HNBR through the mass balance approach, by procuring sustainable C4 fractions made from bio-naphtha to manufacture the synthetic rubber.

Typical Applications

  • O-Rings, Gaskets, Oil Seals
  • Oil Hoses
  • Timing Belts
  • Air Conditioner Seals, Hoses
